December '98

Skip boring intro and hit the Menu of Magnificence

As you can see, this thing's still experiencing growing pains. We know many of you had problems with the first Little Cracked Egg edition of this mag. Unfortunately, we were never able to figure it all out. Many people gave selflessly of their time and we still couldn't figure it out. The problem is that the circumstances were incredibly varied. There never appeared to be any common threads amongst those with problems. The only possibility we came up with is that this damn thing is so long that people are having problems with the download. To that end, we're trying out a modified format this time. (Kinda obvious, I guess.)

You'll also notice that this is the first edition that I don't write every damned thing. Well, that's 'cuz my Peorian pal, TJ O'Brien, had some cool news that he'd posted at one point. I asked him if he'd like to shape it up for inclusion here and he kindly did so. (Thanks, TJ!) In addition, you'll see a press release from Southern Culture in here asking for any help people can give in locating equipment that was stolen from them. I asked them for this stuff in the hopes that it'll help out. People stealing equipment from musicians is pretty damn low, so I'm hoping you'll all read this stuff and keep your eyes peeled.

So, you ask, what the heck IS this thing? Well, when I first started The Teen Scene back in September of 1990, it was only four pages long. Thing is, even as it grew to a whopping eight pages over the next three and a half years, it came out monthly. It wasn't big, but it had news, spews, and reviews. Since then, The Teen Scene has gotten much fatter; it's also gotten to the point where it only comes out a few times a year. Don't get me wrong, I truly love the dang thing, but I miss that immediacy of having the late-breaking news. Maybe this is my way of getting back into that without having to publish the dang thing on paper. This will be very low-tech, and it's gonna depend quite a bit on reader input.

Boston drummer Hugh O'Neill, formerly of indie-punk band the Queers, succumbed to cancer on Jan. 20th 1999. He spent over a decade recording and touring with that band. His prior involvements included drumming with Richard Lloyd's Alchemey and Boston's Reddy Teddy, with the late Matthew McKenzie McKenzie. Hugh's recorded output with the Queers is available on Lookout Records
